Profile
Huscarl 6’s estate lay in south Somerset at Street, which takes its name (Old English strēt ‘made road, Roman road’) from the Foss Way that here descends into the Axe valley. The DB entry makes it appear that it was an estate of 1½ hides that he had shared with Almær TRE, but the corresponding entries in Exon(357a1) and TO(524b8) make it clear that Almær’s land had been added to that of Huscarl after the Conquest. There is no reason to presume a connection between the two men TRE.It is possible that Huscarl 6 was the same man as Huscarl 9, the TRE holder of another tiny estate less than 30 miles away and who retained it as a king’s thegn in 1086. However, despite a very late and tenuous tenurial association between the two estates (see Huscarl 9) their small sizes reduce the likelihood that both were held by the same man at this distance and the fact that the name Huscarl was not exceptionally rare in the late eleventh century renders it more likely than not that Huscarl 6 and Huscarl 9 were different people.
