Profile
Timsbury in north Somerset is too far from the estates in the Welsh marches for the identity of their owners to be at all likely. Two other estates at Timsbury were recorded in DB, both also belonging to men with names of ultimately Scandinavian origin, Api (Api 2) and Sibbi (Sibbi 3). The circumstances of the three estates suggest that Timsbury had once formed a unit of 10 hides, before being divided first into two holdings of 5 hides apiece, one of the latter divided later into two unequal shares (Som. 5:15; 45:6). Notably, Gunward’s manor included 39 acres each of meadow and pasture, the same quantities as Api’s (26 acres) and Sibbi’s (13 acres) combined. Ape’s and Sibe’s holdings shared a water mill 2:1 as well as the meadow and pasture.
