Profile
One of the smaller holdings called Stowey in 1086 can be identified as the place later called Dodington, adjacent to Over and Nether Stowey on the north-eastern slopes of the Quantocks. Dodington acquired its name from its holder in 1086, the king’s thegn Doda (Phill. Som. place-name note 46,12), so that it seems advisable to refer to his predecessor there as Sigeweald ‘of Stowey’. Sigeweald’s name otherwise occurs in DB only on an even smaller holding in Suffolk, plainly not the same person.Bibliography
