Profile

Sibbi 3 held one of the three manors in the 10-hide vill of Timsbury in the low hills of north-east Somerset. The pattern of assessments and resources suggests that Timsbury had been divided first into two holdings of 5 hides, one of them later being further divided into shares of 3 hides and 2 hides. In 1066 Gunward 2 had the 5-hide manor, Api 2 the 3-hide manor, and Sibbi the 2-hide manor. There is a clear indication of the overall division in the quantities of meadow and pasture on the three estates in 1086. Gunward’s manor had 39 acres of each, Api’s 26 acres, and Sibbi’s 16 acres. The suspicion must be that the figure for Sibbi’s manor includes a scribal confusion of minims in the roman numeral which had changed xiii to xvi; that makes the totals for Sibbi’s and Api’s manors together 39 acres, the same as for Gunward’s manor, and means that their half of the total was divided between them in the proportions 1:2. They shared a mill worth 5s. in the same proportions. The fact that Sibbi held in parage (Exon: 140v) b2) further confirms the existence of some close connection with Api. All three landowners’ names at Timsbury in 1066 were of Scandinavian derivation, and Sibbi and Api were of similar form.
