Profile

Ordweald 4 was one of two unnamed thegns recorded by DB as the TRE holders of a large estate at Cameley, near the source of The Cam in the hills of north Somerset. Further details are provided by Exon (150b1) and TO (522b1), which name the two thegns as Ordweald and Scirweald ‘of Somerset’ (Scirweald 3) and give the hidage of each man’s holding.

Exon also records that the two men held their lands in parage TRE; but the TO entry qualifies this by stating that Ordweald had held his 4½ hides in parage TRE and that these had then been added to Scirweald’s land, presumably after the Conquest. Although the Exon entry and the shared second element ‑weald in the men’s names could indicate that they were related, therefore, the TO entry casts doubt on this interpretation.

It does not seem likely that Ordweald 4 was the same person as Ordweald 3, even though both men held moderate estates TRE and shared the same extremely rare name, because Cameley lay more than 40 miles from Ordweald 3’s nearest estate and passed to a different successor than those of Ordweald 3; nevertheless, the possibility cannot be ruled out.
