Profile
The DB entry relating to Glastonbury Abbey’s manor of Pilton in Somerset reads as if Wulffrith 2 was the TRE co-holder of its sub-manors at Shepton Mallet and Croscombe, but the Exon entry (165b3-166b) clarifies that he was in fact the holder only of Shepton. Both DB and Exon agree that Wulffrith ‘could not be separated from the church’, which implies that he was a dependent tenant of the abbey.Although his 6½ hides will have made Wulffrith 2 a locally important holder, the TRE estates of Wulffrith 3 and Wullfrith 4 both seem too small and (at more than 60 miles) too distant for any of these three to be regarded as the same person.
