Profile

Tillington and Hanford passed to different lords in 1086, but Richard the forester’s fief in north Staffordshire formed a geographical block convenient for his duties as forester, and Hanford may have been separated from Tillington and given to Richard simply for that reason. Tillington lies 2 miles north of Stafford in the relatively favoured country of mid Staffordshire. Hanford is 12 miles to the north in the upper Trent valley. The underwood (silva modica) recorded at Hanwood may have provided Tholf with a resource that was evidently absent from Tillington.

There is nothing to link this Staffordshire Tholf with any of the others elsewhere. In particular the estates assigned to the nearest, Tholf 4, some 50 miles away in north Derbyshire, were equally small and very unlikely to have belonged to the same person.
