Profile
Mann 16 was one of 210 sokemen holding an estate of 22¼ carucates TRE; although Rumble (1986: 1,102 Notes) suggested that this land was at East Bergholt in south-east Suffolk, the text and layout of the DB entry make it more likely that it was at Shotley, about 9 miles further east and occupying a peninsular at the confluence between the rivers Orwell and Stour.DB records 119 sokemen on the estate in 1086 and that Mann was among those who was present both then and TRE. It states that he had been one of two such survivors who had been he was commended to Earl Gyrth (Gyrth 1) and in the soke of Earl Harold (Harold 3). It may be that Mann and the other sokemen had also been dependent tenants of Gyrth, although the DB entry is neither explicit or certain on this point.
Although there were other estates within 20 miles of Shotley that were held TRE by people with names that could potentially be confused with Mann, none of these were associated with Earl Gyrth or passed to King William (William 1) after the Conquest, which together with the fact that Mann 16’s holding was clearly tiny means that he need not be considered in connection with any other person or estate.
