Profile

Rendham was much divided among different holders in 1066. It stands on the river Alde, one of the valleys cut into the Boulder Clay of High Suffolk. Most of the freemen there were commended to Robert Malet’s antecessor Eadric of Laxfield (Eadric 113) (Suff. 3:99; 6:43; 7:135, 141, 146). Among them was Tholf, who with four others shared 35 acres and 1 plough worth 5s. 10d. (i.e. 70d., so 2d. per acre). Unless he had other land where his name was not given in DB, this Tholf was a peasant smallholder and cannot conceivably be the same as any of the Tholfs who owned land elsewhere.
