Profile
Although Toppesfield estate lies in relatively close proximity to several estates held TRE by people called Leofgifu, it was the only one to have been held from Christ Church, Canterbury, and to have been in Archbishop Lanfranc’s hands in 1086. This distinct succession tends us towards identifying Leofgifu 14 as a distinct woman and is indeed the main reason for doing so, but it is admittedly not conclusive. However, the other estates in Suffolk were all very much smaller than 2 hides (even the three held by Leofgifu 21 amounted to only a little over half a hide), as was that in Essex held by Leofgifu 23, which perhaps makes an identity with these holders less likely. The estate held by Leofgifu 10 at Woodham Walter was, at 7 hides, notably larger and such a landholder might well have had other estates; but Leofgifu 10’s lands passed to a sub-tenant of Ralph Bainard and in this instance the difference in successors probably tips the balance against identifying her with Leofgifu 14. The two remaining estates in Essex, held by Leofgifu 17 and 18, were each closer to 1 hide and so might also be associated with Leofgifu 14, and again it is really only the difference in successors that suggests we are dealing with three separate individuals rather than one.
