Profile
The three tiny estates of Yric 2 lay close together at Ashbocking, Hemingstone and Winston in mid-Suffolk, just to the north of Ipswich. Ashbocking and Hemingstone are now adjacent parishes and Winston lies about 4 miles to the north of Ashbocking. By contrast, this cluster of estates lay some 250 miles from the only other estate held TRE by someone called Yric and also 85 miles from the nearest estate held TRE by anyone called Erik. It is therefore safe to presume that these three Suffolk estates were the only ones held by Yric 2 and that he had no connection with any other TRE holder of that or a similar name.In the DB entries for all three estates Yric 2 is described as a ‘free man’ and in two instances (at Winston and Hemingstone) he was commended to the abbot of Ely, who also appears to have had the soke. For the third and largest of Yric 2’s estates (Ashbocking), the soke was shared by ‘the king and the earl’ in 1086 but it is unclear either if this reflects the TRE situation or if Yric had been commended to their antecessors; a TRW claim by Richard fitzGilbert (Richard 5) could indicate that Yric’s lord here was actually Finn 2 the Dane.
