Profile

Deorwulf 18’s two tiny holdings lay at Aspall and Wetheringsett, less than 3 miles apart on either side of a low ridge in mid Suffolk and both in vills with highly-fragmented tenure TRE and in 1086.  At Aspall Deorwulf was one of four free men holding 86 acres worth 40s; the men were commended to three different lords, of which Deorwulf’s was the abbot of Ely, and by 1086 their lands were in the king’s hands while seisin was disputed between two successors.  At Wetheringsett Deorwulf was one of four free men (none of whom other than Deorwulf also held land in Aspall) holding 40 acres that were worth 10s in 1086 and probably much the same TRE.  DB and IE(166) state that in this instance all four free men were in both the commendation and the soke of the abbot of Ely.

Although very small, the close proximity of these two holdings and the association with Ely renders it very probable that both were held by Deorwulf 18 TRE.  However, the tiny size of the holdings concerned, a different lord and a distance of 25 miles renders it highly improbable that there can be any connection with Deorwulf 19 in Essex.
