Profile

Although Cotton was only 12 miles from Fader 3’s manors across the shire boundary in Norfolk, a different person is clearly involved. The vill, standing on the heavy clays of High Suffolk some 14 miles east of Bury St Edmunds, had a total assessment of nearly 3 carucates split up before 1066 among over 40 small landowners. The abbot of Bury and four local grandees, Eadric of Laxfield (Eadric 113), Eadric the king’s reevePASE no., Burgheard of Mendlesham (Burgheard 6), and Leofwine of Bacton (Leofwine ), all had commended men in Cotton (the last two were named from vills which immediately adjoined it). Fader was the only TRE landowner there about whose commendation or soke DB is entirely silent.
