Profile
Ceolweald 4’s tiny manor was at Shotley, an eponymous and estuarine peninsular at the confluence between the rivers Orwell and Stour in south-east Suffolk. His was apparently the only independent holding at Shotley TRE, the rest of the land there being held by Earl Gyrth (Gyrth 1) or Gyrth’s sokemen. As with those other holdings, however, DB states that the soke of Ceolweald’s manor was ‘in Bergholt’, which indicates that it belonged to the great manor of East Bergholt and therefore that his soke-lord was Earl Harold (Harold 3). Colweald’s commended lord was Ælfric, but his tenurial lord, if any, is not specified.Ceolweald’s little manor appears to have been engaged on arable farming, with only half a plough (presumably a plough-team comprising four rather than eight oxen) and with no livestock recorded in DB. His workforce was provided by his two dependent peasant households of one villan and one bordar.
This is the only instance of the name Ceolweald recorded in DB and there is no reason to associate Ceolweald 4 with anyone else.
