Profile

Crawa 2’s was the smallest of three estates at Stansfield, 8½ miles to the south-west of Bury St Edmunds in west Suffolk, that were held by free men TRE and had passed to subtenants of Richard fitzGilbert (Richard 5) by 1086. DB notes that Crawa 2 and the other free men ‘could sell and grant their lands TRE’, showing that they had the power of alienation and were not dependent tenants; but it notes that Richard’s antecessor Wihtgar (Wihtgar 10) had Crawa’s commendation and the soke and sake, indicating that he was their lord.
