Profile

This estate is very small and is far from all others held by someone called Hearding TRE except for that of Hearding 9 at Covehithe, 27 miles away; Hearding 9’s small estate had a different lord TRE and a different successor in 1086, and for these reasons alone it is unlikely that Hearding 9 and Hearding 8 were the same person.  Although Hearding 8 was commended to King Edward, who was also the lord of Hearding 10, their lands lay far apart, were not of similar size and passed to different successors.  Hearding 8’s association with someone called Tovi might arouse suspicions of an identification with Hearding 4, son of Eadnoth, who had close associations with the estates of his father’s colleage Tovi, the TRE sheriff of Somerset; but although the name Hearding is extremely rare it does not seem reasonable to associate Hearding 8 with Hearding 4 on these grounds alone, especially when the scale of their land-holding was so vastly different. Furthermore, the spelling Hardincus in the Domesday entry for Horswold is unique and may add further weight to the likelihood that Hearding 8 was distinct from the other people of that name.
