Profile

Barn 3’s estate was one of several small TRE holdings at Westerfield, on a hill about 2 miles to the north-east of Ipswich in south-east Suffolk, but was the only one to be described as a manor in DB.  He was a free man and commended to Ralph the staller (Ralph 2).

Barn 3’s small manor was only 3¼ miles to the west of the tiny TRE manor of Beorn 16, and it is conceivable that the DB form Bar for Barn’s name could represent a misspelled form of Beorn 16’s name (spelt Beor’ and Beorn’ in DB and Bern in IE).  Against this possibility, however, are that the men had different TRE lords and different post-Conquest successors and that the name Beorn, although unusual, was not rare.  Despite the proximity of the two estates, therefore, the balance of the evidence is just in favour of regarding Barn 3 and Beorn 16 as different men.
