Profile

Seaxwine 2 is identified because he represents the only instance of that name recorded in DB or indeed from pre-Conquest England.

He was one of roughly forty free men and women who between them held a total of nearly 3 carucates at Cotton, an estate centred on a small valley amidst the clays of central Suffolk. Most of these holders were free peasants under a variety of lords TRE and Seaxwine’s little holding of 20 acres set him among the half-dozen largest landholders there. DB states that he was He was commended to Burgheard, identifiable as the son of Earl Ælfgar (Burgheard 6).

Seaxwine’s holding was predominantly arable, with one plough-team recorded there TRE. The value of Seaxwine’s holding is not given in DB but the entry does record that its valuation was included in that for the demesne of (Old) Newton, although in the corresponding entry for Newton (DB Suff. 31,51) there is no explicit reference to Seaxwine or to his holding at Cotton by name. Nevertheless, it may well be that he was one of the three unnamed free men recorded in the Newton entry, although the differences between the resources recorded in the two entries do not allow a more confident identification.
