Profile

The main LDB entry for Letheringham, in the Deben valley in east Suffolk, lists among the free men of the vill six commended to Ely abbey, who shared 60 acres with nine others, and a further free man, with 60 acres of his own, commended half to Ely and half to Geoffrey de Mandeville’s antecessor Healfdene , an important figure in the district. Ely’s own copy of its Domesday return differs in the details in saying that Ceolric, with 60 acres, was one of six free men commended to Ely (IE: 151). Even though the two versions cannot be fully reconciled, it is clear that Ceolric was the largest of Ely’s men in the vill, with 60 acres. IE uses the present tense of his tenure (Gelric[us] h[abe]t .lx. acr[as]), so it seems that he survived in 1086, farming with 1½ ploughs and with 2 bordars as tenants.
