Profile

Mauua 1’s tiny holding was in south Suffolk at Brantham, which as the name suggests (probably Old English brant-hamm ‘steep land in a river-bend’) is a hill around which the River Stour that divides Suffolk from Essex loops and begins to broaden into an estuary. Although DB records that the soke of his land belonged to Earl Harold (Harold 3) it also notes that Mauua was a free man ‘under commendation only’, which from the context of the entry suggests that he was commended to the TRE holder of Stutton, Skalpi.

Mauua 1 cannot certainly be identified with any other person and it is not known if his actual name was Mawa or Manna, for which reason the DB form of his name is retained here. If the DB reference to Mauua 1 being a ‘free man’ is not taken as gender specific (as can occur elsewhere in DB) then it is possible that Mauua 1 was the same as Mawa 3, a ‘half-free woman’ who held land about 12 miles away TRE, but both holdings were tiny and their holders had different TRE lords. No-one called Manna held land within 60 miles of Mauua 1’s holding TRE; and although Mann 16 held a few acres only 7½ miles away, again there is no good reason to identify him with Mauua 1.
