Profile
Alwynn 4 is identified because her holding was too small and, at more than 60 miles, too distant from any other held TRE by a woman of that name for any connection between them to be considered.Alwynn 4’s lands lay among numerous small holdings on either side of a tributary of the River Alde at Great Glemham in east Suffolk, but whether her lands were interspersed with those of the other holdings or formed a discrete unit is unknown.
The scant DB entry for Alwynn 4’s holding records her as a lib[er] ho[mo], a ‘free man’, a term referring to her status rather than her gender. Although it also spells her name as Aluuem, the final ‘m’ is probably a scribal error for ‘nn’ and there is no reason to doubt that the name intended really was the feminine Alwynn (von Feilitzen 1937: 160-1).
DB records that the soke of this holding belonged to the abbot of Ely in 1086; whether this was also the case before the Conquest and when Alwynn held the land is not stated, although it seems more likely than not.
