Profile
Leodmann 2 was a free man who with Stanheard shared a tiny manor at Chediston, on a tributary of the River Blyth near Halesworth in north-east Suffolk. LDB records that Leodmann and Stanheard were in the commendation of both King Edward (Edward 15) and Queen Eadgyth (Eadgyth 3). Since the two men were co-holders of a single manor it is possible that they were related to each other. The LDB form Ledmanus could be interpreted as either the Old English name Leodmann or its Continental Germanic equivalent Liudman (von Feilitzen 1937: 309-10). However, given the small size of the holding, that CG names were unusual in pre-Conquest contexts and that the co-holder had an OE name, it is preferable to adopt the OE interpretation Leodmann. This was the only estate held by someone of this name TRE.
By 1086 this manor had passed to Roger Bigod (Roger 6), who was sheriff of Suffolk on several occasions between 1071 and 1106 (Green 1990: 76); he or his immediate successors apparently consolidated this manor and several of the other small TRE holdings at Chediston into a single estate (Copinger 1905-11: II 33-4).
