Profile

Offton, on a low ridge 7 or 8 miles west of Ipswich, was divided among 15 free men in 1066 (Suff. 1:69; 7:60; 29:7; 62;1); among them was an Ealdwine, half commended to Roger Bigod’s antecessor, who with Blæcsunu had 1½ acres. DB leaves it unsaid whether they had equal or unequal shares, who had the other half of Ealdwine’s commendation, and even whom it meant by ‘Roger Bigod’s antecessor’. The best guesses are that the antecessor was the Leofcild who held much the largest part of this manor of Bigod’s TRE, and that Leofcild’s own lord, Archbishop Stigand (Stigand 3), shared Ealdwine’s commendation. The way the entry is worded makes it probable that Ealdwine survived in 1086, holding under Bigod’s tenant Hugh de Houdain.
