Profile

A Frieb’ is described as a priest in DB and is listed among the ‘vavassors’, or under-tenants, of the king in Suffolk in 1086, when he held ½ acre (valued at 1d) at Coddenham in alms from the king.  Frieb’ could represent the names Fridebern or Fridebert, both of which were extremely rare.  However, given his priestly status, it is very probable that he was the same man as Fridebern the priest recorded in FBB (143r, as Frebern presbiter) among the minor tenants of the abbey of Bury St Edmunds’ estate at Huntefelde (perhaps to be identified with Whatfield: see Leofcild 10) in Cosford half-Hundred, about 9 miles to the south-west of Coddenham and where he held 5 acres rendering 5d.  It is not possible to determine which church he was associated with as priest.
