Profile

Thorsten was one of four free men in the much divided mid-Suffolk vill of Aspall whose lands (86 fiscal acres in all, worth 40s., and always with 3 ploughs at work) were in dispute in 1086 between the widowed mother of Robert Malet and Bishop Odo of Bayeux, both of whom claimed to have been given seisin at different times since the Conquest. The four men had different lords: Thorsten’s was Saxi, who owned property in the neighbouring vills of Debenham and Ulverston (Suff. 34:12–13).

Aspall is about 20 miles from the nearest places which belonged to a Thorsten in 1066, both of them in Suffolk. The three men were all very small landowners and commended to different lords TRE, which argues firmly against any identification of them as the same person.
