Profile
Leohtwine 2’s tiny estate was one among numerous little holdings scattered either side of the valley of the River Fynn at Tuddenham in south-east Suffolk. DB states that he was a free man whose lord was Healfdene, although the precise nature of that lordship is uncertain.Leohtwine was probably a free peasant farmer, with one plough to work his arable land, 3 acres of meadow for the oxen of the plough-team and two bordars and their households living on the estate and providing much of the labour.
This is the only record of someone called Leohtwine in DB and even the first element of his name was extremely rare. It is therefore probably significant that the only other name featuring it in DB, that of the free woman Leohtgifu 2, occurs only 4 miles from Leohtwine’s holding at Tuddenham. This rare and shared first element in their names and their close proximity may well point to a familial connection between Leohtwine 2 and Leofgifu 2, although more evidence is needed to establish the link.
