Profile
The precise location of Ginni 3’s holding is uncertain. It was one of six tiny holdings in Bosmere Hundred called Langhedena or Langedana in DB, a name that probably represents Old English lang(an)-denu ‘long valley’ and generally referred to fairly narrow ones with a gentle gradient (cf. Gelling and Cole 2000: 113-14). It is, however, difficult to determine which of the valleys of the Gipping and its minor tributaries is meant.Ginni 3 was a free man, like all of those holding land at Langadana TRE; DB states that the king and the earl had the soke of his land, but no other details are forthcoming. Although the name Ginni was extremely rare there is no reason to associate him with Ginni 2, the TRE holder of 2 houses in Colchester some 20 miles away, because both men’s holdings were far too tiny for any link between them to be considered
