Profile

Offa 13’s small manor was at Treyford, on the edge of the South Downs in west Sussex. He was said to hold it ‘as a fief from the bishop’ TRE, the bishop being Bishop Æethelric II of Selsey (Æthelric 64) and the wording implying that Offa was a dependent tenant. Although Offa held his land ‘as a manor’ it was also regarded as a part of a larger manor of 11 hides held by Æthelheard 27 TRE. By 1086 the 2 hides that Offa had held were being held by a subtenant of Æthelric’s successor, Bishop Stigand of Chichester (Stigand 5), as a prebend in Chichester cathedral, but it is not clear if Offa’s manor had similarly been a prebend in either Chichester or Selsey church TRE.
