Profile
The name Grene occurs only once in DB, holding the larger of two parts of the vill of Cokeham, on the Sussex coast west of the mouth of the Adur. Like other vills hereabouts, Cokeham stretched from meadowland near the coast through rich arable on the coastal plain and up the dip-slope of the South Downs (VCH Suss. VI (1), 53–4).Unusually for Sussex, Grene held Cokeham from (de) Earl Harold, part of a small cluster of manors so held in this part of Sussex, but the meaning of the phrase is not transparent.
