Profile
The location of Hernetoc 2’s tiny holding is as uncertain as the interpretation of his name. DB notes merely that it lay in Foxearle Hundred in Hastings Rape, the easternmost rape of Sussex, although it also records that Hernetoc ‘could go where he pleased’ and thereby indicates that he had power of alienation over his land and was not a dependant tenant. The most likely scenario is that Hernetoc was a free peasant settler on a beneficially-assessed virgate near the edge of the Pevensey Levels. It is conceivable that Hernetoc was connected or related to Olaf 13, who in 1086 held this land as his sole subtenancy. If the DB form Hernetoc represents the name ‘Toki son of Arni’ (see ‘The name’, above) then it is possible that Hernetoc could be the same as Toki, who held a small but as yet unidentified holding at Chenenolle in an adjacent hundred TRE and constitutes the only certain instance of the name Toki as a TRE landholder in Sussex. Supporting evidence is lacking, however.
