Bibliography

Tubbi 3 was one of three men holding the smaller of two estates at Newbold, on the north bank of the River Leam in Warwickshire, the other two men being Alsige and Æthelræd (under which latter profile an identification of the estate as Newbold in Litlington rather than Newbold Comyn is discussed). The relationship between the three men, if any, is not apparent from the DB entry and neither is the proportion of the 2 hides that each man held, but it is stated that the men ‘held it freely TRE’.

This was the only estate held TRE by someone called Tubbi and the only other person of that name recorded in DB was associated with a place 65 miles away and no connection between the two need be considered. However, because Tubbi represents a short form of the name Thorbiorn (Turbern), it is possible that Tubbi 3 was the same man as one of the Thorbiorns holding land elsewhere in Warwickshire TRE, either Thorbiorn who held Cubbington only 2 miles from Newbold or including Thorbiorn who held Woodcote only 4 miles away and which, like that at Newbold, passed to Robert 11 after the Conquest. No further evidence is available to support these possibilities, however, and because Tubbi did exist as a personal name in its own right elsewhere then Tubbi 3 must be regarded as a separate person who had a share in just this one small estate TRE.
