Profile
The four instances of the name Aski in Domesday Book are located so far apart for such small estates that there can be no question of identifying any of them as the same man. Edgbaston, on the western side of Warwickshire, was held TRE by Aski 4 and another man; as usual in Warwickshire, the text does not say explicitly that they held it as two manors, and the relationship between Aski and his co-holder is obscure. The distribution of the name Eskil, in its most common spelling Aschil (and variants), does not extend to Warwickshire and is very rare in western Mercia as a whole, so there are no grounds for thinking that Aschi at Edgbaston was a mistake for Aschil.
