Profile
Winegot 3’s small estate was at Baycliff, on the high ground near the watershed between the rivers Wylye and Frome in west Wiltshire. This estate lay just 5 miles from Warminster; and, given the extreme rarity of the continental name Winegot in pre-Conquest England, it is possible that Winegot 3 could be connected with Winegod 1, who was active as a moneyer at Warminster during 1029-36. However, the 30-year gap between their occurrences represents a considerable obstacle to this suggestion.
It is also notable that Baycliff is only between 19 and 23 miles respectively from the small TRE estate of Winegot 2 in Somerset, which given the extreme rarity of the name is probably close enough for a connection with Winegot 3 to be considered. However, the association of Winegot 2 with the priesthood and perhaps Glastonbury Abbey on the one hand and the possible association of Winegot 3 with Winegod 1 on the other, together with the small size of their estates and the differences in their post-Conquest successors, render it more likely than not that Winegot 2 and Winegot 3 were different people.
