Profile
Theodger 6’s manor was at Clevancy in north Wiltshire; the place-name derives from Old English clif ‘cliff, steep slope’ and refers to the escarpment of the western shelf of the Marlborough Downs. He held one of four manors there TRE that were combined to form a single manor of 4 hides after the Conquest, but how that assessment was previously divided between the four manors, whether equally or otherwise, is unknown. In any case, however, Theodger 6’s manor will have been fairly small and there is therefore no reason to connect him with either of the other two TRE landholders of that (extremely rare) name, each of whose estates lay more than 50 miles from Clevancy.
