Profile

Cynewig 4’s estate was at Ashton Giffard, in the narrow valley of the river Wylye running across the southern part of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. Although his name was extremely rare, his TRE estate of 6 hides lay more than 40 miles to the south of the nearest one held by the Gloucestershire thegn Cynewig 3 and had passed to a different successor by 1086 than did any of Cynewig 3’s. The possibility that they were the same person cannot be ruled out, but the balance of probability is just in favour of identifying the TRE holder of Ashton Giffard as a separate person, Cynewig 4.

In the Phillimore translation of DB (Thorn and Thorn 1979: DB 27,14), Cynewig 4’s name is rendered as Kenwin, which would represent a form of the name Cynewine. However, the manuscript quite clearly shows the spelling Chenui and, in the absence of further evidence to the contrary, this points to ‑wīg rather than ‑wine as being the second element.
