Profile

Burghelm 8 shared with Ælfric and Godgifu a large estate at Clyffe Pypard, just below the western escarpment of the Marlborough Downs in north Wiltshire. It is not known if there was a familial relationship between these three TRE holders or if the land was shared equally between them; if it was, then each would have had a substantial estate of 5¼ hides.

There is no other person called Burghelm recorded as a landholder TRE in DB, nor is there a clear instance of the name in 1086. However, the Thorns interpreted the name Borel, recorded as the 1086 subtenant of two Wiltshire estates, as representing the Old English name Burghelm (Thorn and Thorn 1979: DB 24,31-2). If this is correct then these two estates, at Langley Burrell and West Tytherton, are be close enough to Clyffe Pypard for a connection with Burghelm 8 to be considered. However, it is difficult to explain the orthography of the DB form in these terms and the spellings of the manorial suffix of Langley Burrell, which appears to derive from Borel or his descendants (Gover et al. 1939: 105), do not show any support for a derivation from OE Burghelm. A continental origin for the form Borel seems far more likely (cf. Morlet 1968: 62).
