Profile

Ceolwine 1 had a small estate at Chippenham, by the River Avon in north-west Wiltshire, which he held on lease from the sheriff, Eadric 66.  DB records Ceolwine’s land as ‘1 hide less ½ virgate’ that in 1086 was part of the demesne farm of Chippenham.  It is probable that the ‘missing’ ½ virgate is that described by DB under the main entry for the royal manor of Chippenham as a ½ virgate of that manor’s farm in 1086 that had been thegnland held by Eadric TRE.  If so, then presumably Ceolwine’s estate had also constituted thegnland and his lord, beyond Eadric, had been King Edward (Edward 15).
