Profile
Hunwine 11’s small estate was at East Kennett, where the Ridge Way crosses the River Kennett to the south-east of the great earthworks of Avebury in Wiltshire. After the Conquest the estate passed to Hugh l’Asne (Hugh 28), and DB notes that it was held by the church of St Mary’s, Winchester, from Hugh and on behalf of his daughter. Crowley et al. (1983: 119-25) suggest that the abbess of St Mary’s was already holding the estate in 1066, but the basis for this suggestion is not reliable. It is unlikely that Hunwine 11 was the same person as Hunwine 12 because their small estates were 58 miles apart; the small TRE estate of Hunwine 13 was even further away and too far removed for any connection with Hunwine 11 to be considered.
