Profile
Mainard 4’s estate is called Smalebroc in DB, which can be identified with Smallbrook Farm near Warminster, in the Vale of Wylye on the western edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire (Crittall 1965: 1-5, 96-103; Thorn and Thorn 1979: DB 68,27 Notes; contra Gover et al. 1939: 133, 159-60).The extreme rarity of the name Mainard in pre-Conquest England renders it possible that Mainard 4 was the same person as Mainard 3, who held a small estate in west Hampshire TRE. Nevertheless, the facts that both estates were small, were separated by more than 30 miles (and Salisbury Plain) and passed to different post-Conquest successors make it more likely that they were different people.
