Profile

Ottar 7 and Karl were the TRE holders of the only two manors at Flixton, in the north of the East Riding of Yorkshire, which were together assessed for 10 carucates. Two men of the same names also held the only two manors in the adjacent vill of Folkton, assessed for 9 carcuates. The coincidences of close proximity, similar estate size and the association of the rare name Ottar with that of Karl render it very probable that the references were to the same two men. DB does not specify the sizes of each man’s estates, but if divided equally Ottar 7’s would have had a total assessment of 9½ carucates with a value of 40s.

The only other TRE instance of the rare name Ottar in Yorkshire (and indeed the only such instance within about 150 miles of Flixton and Folkton) was as the holder of a manor at Langtoft, just 8 miles further south and further up into the Wolds. Although there was no association with Karl in this instance the manor was again of moderate extent at 3 carucates and, like Flixton and Folkton, had passed into the king’s hands by 1086. It is probable, therefore, that this manor too had been held by Ottar 7 TRE.

Given the rarity of his name and the distance between these three manors and any others held TRE by someone of the same name, there is no reason to consider Ottar 7 in connection with anyone else.
