Profile
Earnwulf 3’s substantial manor was at Aldingham on the south-eastern coast of Furness, in what became north-west Lancashire but was included by DB in a section of King William’s lands titled ‘Amounderness’ and treated in the Yorkshire folios. The DB entry is terse and gives no information beyond Earnwulf’s name and that of his manor, the latter’s assessment and that it was in the king’s hands in 1086.Despite the extreme rarity of his name and the substantial size of his estate there is no reason to consider Earnwulf 3 in connection with any other TRE holder of that name because their estates all lay 130 miles or more away from Aldingham.
