Profile

Most of the 15-carucate vill of Sheriff Hutton, 9 miles north of York, was soke of one or other of the manors of Bulmer and Stittenham TRE and passed to the new lord of those manors, Robert, count of Mortain, from whom it was held by Nigel Fossard (Yorks. 5N: 54). Fossard illicitly took over the rest of the vill, which comprised 3 manors of 4 carucates held TRE by Thorulf, Thorkil, and Thorsten, until compelled to surrender it to the king during the Domesday inquest (Yorks. 1N:87; CN:5). The three landowners in question may well have been kinsmen, given the repetition of the first element in their names. Sheriff Hutton was some way from the other manors held by a Thorsten TRE and there are no other circumstances which serve to identify the man there with any other Thorsten.
