Profile

The Norman lord Erneis de Buron had a tenant called Turstan at Copgrove, 20 miles north-west of York in the low hills between Nidderdale and lower Wensleydale. The spelling points to the English name Thorsten rather than the Norman Thurstan, which in DB was invariably spelled –stin(us) and not –stan.

The manor was assessed at 6 carucates and had land for 3 ploughs. Thorsten had 1 plough in demesne in 1086 and his 7 villan tenants a second plough; the value had fallen from 20s. TRE to 16s. in 1086.

The suggestion has been made that this man was identical with Erneis de Buron’s tenant Thurstan (Turstinus), who in 1086 held two small manors in north Lincolnshire at Messingham and Kettleby. Although not entirely out of the question, it is not supported by any evidence that the manors concerned descended together after 1086 (Clay 1955: pp. 23, 26, 62).
