Profile
Fech’s manor of Giggleswick and its berewicks formed a compact group in upper Ribblesdale. Stainforth lay 2 miles up the dale from Giggleswick, Rathmell 2 miles down; Kirkby Malham and Litton were to the east across the fells in their own dales, but still only 6–8 miles away by the easiest roads. Feg’s manor of Langcliffe was just across the valley bottom from Giggleswick, closer than any of the latter’s own berewicks. This geographical concentration and the extreme rarity of the personal name Fech make a compelling case for the identity of Fech 3, though the common succession by Roger the Poitevin adds nothing since Roger’s fief in this district of Craven was constructed on a geographical basis.Remarkably, the same personal name gave rise to the place-name Feizor (‘Fech’s sheiling’), a hamlet barely 2 miles from Giggleswick, standing high on the hillside which looks south-west towards the head-streams of the river Wenning, in a township (Lawkland) which has no entry in DB. The man who gave his name to Feizor must surely have been either Fech 3 or a namesake in an earlier or later generation of his family.
Giggleswick is much too far from south Shropshire for identity with the other Fech to be at all plausible.
