Profile

The uncommon name Niveling occurs only twice in DB, at Seacroft on a tributary of the river Aire 3 miles east of Leeds, and at Snitertun, a lost vill somewhere in the vicinity (Faull and Moorhouse 1981: II, 233, 327–8). Plainly they are same person. He was named first of four men holding manors at Snitertun and second of five at Seacroft; no other name was common to both places, and the nature of the familial or other relationships among them is obscure.
