Profile
Ilbert de Lacy’s manor of North Milford, 10 miles south-west of York, was held from him in 1086 by one Tursten, who appears only here on Lacy’s extensive fief. The spelling points to an Englishmen called Thorsten rather than a Norman Thurstan. Over three dozen French Thurstans can be identified in 1086 and their names were invariably spelled Turstinus (or on occasion Torstinus), never Tursten.Ilbert had a predecessor also called Thorsten (Turstan) (Thorsten 47) at Beeston, only 15 miles from North Milford. Conceivably they were the same person, but 15 miles was somewhat further than the distances normal when an Englishman survived the Conquest but was resettled on a different manor. The spellings are different too, though that has less weight as a factor in distinguishing them.
Thorsten’s manor was assessed at 2 carucates and worth 10s. in 1086. At the time of Domesday he was farming the demesne with 1 plough, and had 4 villans and 5 bordars as tenants, ‘but they do not plough’ (sed non arant). Presumably they kept livestock.
