Profile

Barn 2 shared with Ulf an estate of 2 carucates at Ellerton, on the River Derwent in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

There is no entry regarding this land in the main text of DB, but the Clamores for Yorkshire record that Nigel Fossard  had relinquished to the king 2 carucates at Ellerton that had been Barn’s and Ulf’s.  DB also records 2 carucates at Ellerton that comprised a berewick and sokeland of Aughton manor and which were held by Nigel in 1086 as a subtenant of the count of Mortain, but the entry in the ‘Summary’ for Yorkshire (DB fo. 381) shows that these 2 carucates were different from the 2 carucates that were now in the king’s hands.

It is just possible that Barn 2 was the same man as Beorn 12, whose nearest estate lay only 20 miles from Ellerton, because as well as the relative proximity there is also the potential for confusion between the DB forms of their respective personal names.  Nevertheless, it remains more likely than not that they were different men because the name Beorn was unusual but not rare and because Beorn’s estates passed to a different post-Conquest successor.
