Summary

Swetmann 17’s name occurs only as the patronymic of Wulfstan, who was one of 112 peasants on a manor of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Rougham (Suffolk), 3¾ miles to the east-south-east of Bury (Douglas 1932: 29). The corresponding DB entry records 90 free men and 11 bordars on the non-demesne part of the manor in 1086 but does not include their names (DB Suffolk 14,51).

Despite the implicit continuity of the holdings at Rougham between TRE and TRW in DB we cannot assume that Swetmann 17 ever held the 12 acres held by his son in 1086. However, that his son was then holding land does imply that Swetmann should be assigned a floreat before this, albeit not necessarily a pre-Conquest one, and so c.1070 is suggested here.
