Profile
The small estate of Ælfhild Dese in west Berkshire lay more than fifty miles from the nearest estate also held TRE by someone called Ælfhild (that being the yet smaller holding of Ælfhild 12) and even further from one of comparable or larger size. It is therefore unlikely that Ælfhild 11 is to be associated with any other TRE (or TRW) landholder of that name.Von Feilitzen (1937: 175) regarded Ælfhild 11’s byname ‘Dese’ as obscure, but Morgan (1979: 31,3 Notes) suggests that it represents a weak form of Old English ides ‘a lady’. In either case, however, it does not occur as a byname for any of the other women called Ælfhild in DB, which strengthens the suggestion that Ælfhild 11 held only this one small estate.
