Profile

Leomær 6’s small estate at Wingrave, near the eastern border of Buckinghamshire, seems slightly isolated from the cluster of estates in north Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire held TRE by people with this or a similar name. Wingrave lies about 23 miles from the two small estates of Leomær 7, 24 miles from that of Leomær 9 and more than 25 miles from the similarly small estate of Leodmær 8 and the slightly larger group held by Leodmær 6. Furthermore, each of these had a different TRE lord and their estates passed to different TRW successors. None of these features – moderate distance, different TRE lord or different TRW successor – would be conclusive in itself, but when taken together they render it probable that Leomær 6 was a distinct individual and that Wingrave was his only estate.

DB describes Leomær 6 as being the man of Beorhtric (the TRE lord of several men whose lands passed to Miles Crispin after the Conquest) but notes that he ‘could sell’, which implies that Leomær had the power of alienation over his land and that Beorhtric was his lord only by commendation.

The Phillimore and Alecto editions of DB render Leomær 6’s name as ‘Leofmer’ and ‘Leofmær’ respectively, but there are no grounds for preferring this on the basis of the DB form Lemar.
